Carol Pitts Diedrichs, Principal Consultant

Carol Pitts Diedrichs is currently one of the Principals of re:work Library Consulting and also holds the title of Professor and Director Emeritus of The Ohio State University Libraries.  From January 2010 through January 2016, she led The Ohio State University Libraries as Director of University Libraries; the title of Vice Provost was added to her responsibilities in July 2013; she retired from the University in January 2016.  From 2003 to 2009, she served as Dean of Libraries, William T. Young Endowed Chair at the University of Kentucky.  From 1987 to 2003, she served in various positions at The Ohio State University Libraries including most recently, Assistant Director for Technical Services and Collections.  She is active in ALA and served as President of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), in 2004-2005.  For 13 years, she served as editor-in-chief of the journal, Library Collections, Acquisitions, and Technical Services.  Carol served as President of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in 2014.  In addition, she served as an elected member of OCLC’s Global Council; and represented the libraries of the Big Ten Academic Alliance consortium on the Governing Board of the HathiTrust.  She also serves as a member of the Editorial Board for the journal, portal. Carol is a frequent speaker, author and consultant particularly in the areas of collection management, technical services and library leadership.  Her work has been recognized by three awards from the American Library Association including the 2008 Ross Atkinson Lifetime Achievement Award from ALCTS.

Lisa German, Principal Consultant

Lisa German is currently one of the Principals of re:work Library Consulting and the Dean of University Libraries and Elizabeth D. Rockwell Chair at the University of Houston Libraries.  From 2005-2015, she was first the Assistant, and then Associate Dean at Penn State University Libraries.  From 1996-2005, she served as the Head of Acquisitions and associate professor of library administration at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and she began her career in 1993 at Wright State University in Dayton in Acquisitions. She was part of the inaugural cohort of the ARL Research Library Leadership Fellows.  She is active in ALA and has served on many committees in the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services and is currently a member of the Library Resources and Technical Services (LRTS) editorial board.  She is on the boards of  the Greater Western Library Consortia (GWLA), the Texas Digital Library (TDL), the Texas Medical Center Library, and on the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Research Coalition (SPARC) Steering Committee. Lisa is an author, presenter, and consultant particularly in the areas of collection management, technical services, and organizational workflows.  Her work has been recognized by two awards from the American Library Association including the 2012 Harrassowitz Leadership in Library Acquisitions Award from ALCTS.

Brian Schottlaender, Principal Consultant

Brian E. C. Schottlaender is currently one of the Principals of re:work consulting and also holds the title of University Librarian Emeritus of the University of California, San Diego. From 1999 to 2017, Schottlaender led the UC San Diego Library as The Audrey Geisel University Librarian. He retired from the University in June 2017. From 1994 to 1999, he served as Associate University Librarian for Collection Services at UCLA. Concurrently, from 1997 to 1999, Schottlaender served as Senior Associate to the Executive Director of the California Digital Library, where he launched the Online Archive of California www.oac.cdlib.org/. From 1989 to 1994, Schottlaender served as Assistant University Librarian for Technical Services at UCLA. Prior to that, from 1980 to 1989, he served in positions of increasing responsibility in the Cataloging Departments at Indiana University, the University of Arizona, and UCLA.

Schottlaender is active in ALA, where he currently serves as one of the Trustees of ALA’s $40M endowment. In 2003-2004, he served as President of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS). Within the Association for Research Libraries (ARL), Schottlaender chaired the Strategic Planning Task Force in 2004, the Search Committee for the Executive Director in 2006, the Financial Strategies Task Force in 2009, the Strategic Thinking and Design Transition Team in 2014, and the Coordinating Committee in 2016. He served as ARL President in 2005-2006. From 2010 through 2015, Schottlaender served as an elected member of the OCLC Board of Trustees. Since 2012, he has served as a member of the HathiTrust Board of Governors, including chairing its Executive Committee, 2012-2013.

A frequent speaker and author, Schottlaender served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Internet Cataloging, 1996-2006, and has served on the portal Editorial Board since 2006. He has consulted widely, particularly in the areas of collections management, workflow optimization, and technology. His work has been recognized by four awards from the American Library Association, including the Margaret Mann Citation and the Melvil Dewey Medal.
